The SOUTHERN JUDOKAN is a local community judo club, supporting young people and adults. We are affiliated to the British Judo Association - our sport’s National Governing Body.

Girls and boys, men and women, all can enjoy judo - both recreationally and competitively. It’s part of a healthy lifestyle!

At our club, you can expect a friendly welcome, a sport which is fun not scary!

We have classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings catering for all ages. Our current age range is from 6 years old to people in their 50’s.

Judo classes are held during School term-time, we also have some holiday activities and a social calendar. Recent events include a family barbecue, competitions and club visits.

On Tuesdays we practice at St John’s Primary School, Rowlands Castle, and on Thursdays at Southbourne Village Hall. We have forged strong links with the local Schools, the local Council and other judo clubs. A committee of parents help with the running of the club.

Happily, starting judo is easy. Please make contact and you will be invited to take part in a class or watch first if that suits you better.

Judo suits can be bought or hired, and are not expensive, bring a drink and some footwear for off the mat, and you are ready to go!

After four weeks we’ll ask you to join the BJA and you’ll be a “judoka” -  a judo player!

Judo was started by an educationalist and martial artist, Jigoro Kano in Japan, in 1882. Judo is now practiced worldwide and those that stick at it find that their efforts are rewarded. Strangely we all seem to get something different from judo. Some will gain confidence, others may well find an improvement in self-discipline, balance, fitness etc.

Kano made judo a martial ‘way’. The stress being placed not just on fighting, but on mutual respect and on efficiency in one’s actions. Kano felt that strong, respectful individuals would benefit both the individual and society as a whole.

We are an inclusive club, all are welcome.

The club is called the ‘Southern Judokan’, please read about our club history.
